“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world. In love, he predestined us.” Ephesians 1:4-5a

Before God made the heavens and earth, he had a plan. God mapped out salvation for the people he loves. That’s what that word predestined in our verse for today means. God picked out whom he would save. And he decided just how he would save them. God doesn’t have a plan B. This plan he is working out for his people is the one that he had before he even made the world. And it’s the one he fully accomplished when Jesus died on the cross. When God chooses us, our salvation is guaranteed, because God has planned out our salvation from beginning to end!

Work it out: Build a pirate ship!

Help your kids understand God’s planned grace by building a pirate ship with them. Start with a large appliance box. One can be found at a hardware or appliance store. Remove one long side from the box and set it on the ground. Ask your children to imagine the box as a pirate ship. Then work with your kids to paint or draw their ship on the side of the box with markers. Finally, cut a triangle out of an old sheet or t-shirt, and tape it to a broom handle or stick. Attach that to the box. You’re all set for a pirate adventure!

Read it:

Read Acts 27:13-44 to your kids while they are in the boat. Feel free to have other family members or a friend spray the children with water bottles or use buckets to “bail out” the ship as you’re reading.

Talk about it:

  • Why Paul wasn’t worried for his safety? He trusted God to stick to his plan.
  • What does it take to make a plan? Maybe talk about how you make lists—a shopping plan—before going to the grocery store.
  • Who is the best planner?
  • How does it make you feel that God loves you and has a plan for you?

Hide it in your heart:

Memorize this definition, question and answer, and the accompanying Bible verse.

Planned Grace: God mapped out salvation for his people.

Q&A: When did God choose to love and save his people? God planned to love and save his people before the creation of the world.

Father, thank you for loving us and making a plan to save your people before the world began. Amen.
