Leader 1 & 2: Hi, I'm Mr./Ms. (First name)!
Leader 1: Good morning/evening!! I have a question for you all: Do any of you speak another language? [Allow the kids to give answers; ask some adults if needed] Well I love to learn other languages, and our first song has a word from another language! That language is HEBREW. Do any of you speak Hebrew? [Allow kids/teachers to answer]
The word we are singing is “Hosanna!” Can you say that with me? “HOSANNA!” In English, we might translate Hosanna as “Salvation! Resuce!! Savior!”
Do you remember our Hosanna song from Easter? This song is really similar, except it’s about the birth of Jesus, when Jesus came to earth as a small baby! We are singing “Hosanna in the Highest!” It’s like saying, “Jesus, You are our Best Savior! You bring the only Eternal Salvation! Your Rescue is Forever!”
Let’s sing about God’s perfect salvation together!
"Hosanna In The Highest" (Advent) by Jeremy Quillo
Leader 2: Our memory verse this month is Exodus 20:12! Repeat after me:
"Honor" = bow down, both arms in front, palms down
"your father" = turn left palm up
"and your mother" = turn right palm up (they echo here)
"so that you may live long" = put palms together, arms straight out to your right, and move your left arm over the top of your head and all the way to the other (left) side (they echo here)
"in the land" = spread your arms out in front, palms up
"the Lord your God" = both hands point up
"is giving to you." = bring open hands down, palms up, extend arms forward like offering a gift
Leader 1: This memory verse is from God’s 10 commandments, which were the rules He has given to His people, including us! He gave us these commands AFTER He had shown His love to Israel, and after He has shown His love to us. His rules show us how to OBEY Him, and He also told us that when we OBEY, we are showing Him that we LOVE Him! Obedience is a way to Love God! Jesus said this too: “If you love me, you will obey my commands.” What are some other ways we show God that we love him? [allow for 2-3 answers, then supply this one if it isn’t given:] That’s right! We can show God we love Him by giving Him an offering, a gift to Him from what He has given us. As we sing this next song, you can bring your offering to God!
"Go Tell It On the Mountain"
Leader 1: Have you noticed that all of our songs are about Jesus’ birth? We are getting ready for Advent, which is when we celebrate Jesus coming down from Heaven to live with us, and for Him to be our Savior when He died for us. This is what we call the GOOD NEWS, or the Gospel.
Have you ever gotten some “good news” before? What did you do with your good news? [Allow for some answers; share a story of your own; the answer to look for is “I shared my good news with someone else!”]
That’s right. When we get good news, we have to share it! It’s exciting, sometimes life-changing, and we can’t wait to tell someone! Well, the news about Jesus coming to Earth to be our Savior isn’t just good news, it’s THE Good News, it’s the BEST news! Of course we want to share it! That’s why we sing that we are “Going to tell it from the Mountain!”
And you know what else? When we share the good news, we are joining in with the whole army of Angels in Heaven who are proclaiming this good news! In fact, we have a song all about it. It’s called, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” which means that all the angels in heaven are saying, “HEY! Listen up! Pay Attention to this amazing thing! Jesus is BORN!”
Are you read to join with me, and all of Heaven’s Angels, to praise Jesus? Let’s sing!
"Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
Leader 1: Hey, who can tell me what time it is? (Catechism time!!)
(Play Catechism riff like “Tequila”: G-F-G-F x3, G-F-G “Catechism!”)
Leader 2: Here is our question for this week! I’ll read the question and you will all read the answer together! [If you have an especially active older kid, you can ask them to read the question out loud for everyone to respond to]
If no one can obey God’s law, why did God give it? God gave the law to show us his goodness, to show us our sin, and to show us we need Jesus.
