We'd love for you to use this short devotional to review this week's story with your kids.
Background: After Jesus’ death two disciples headed to a village named Emmaus. It was a seven mile journey and as they walked they talked about all that had happened. Suddenly Jesus drew near to them, but they could not recognize him. He asked them what they were talking about and they told him. Then Jesus took them through all the scripture that referenced himself. It became dark and it was unsafe to be on the road, so the disciples invited Jesus in for a meal. When they broke the bread for the meal the disciples eyes were opened and they realized it was Jesus. Jesus then vanished into thin air.
Opening/Ice Breaker: Have you ever been confused about something? How did that make you feel? When we get confused do we sometimes need help to figure things out?
Read Luke 24:13-35
- How many disciples were on the road to Emmaus?
- Did the disciples know who Jesus was at first?
- What happened when the disciples realized that it was Jesus?
Prayer: Lord we thank you for sending your son Jesus to earth to die on a cross for our sins. We praise you for the fact that three days later he rose again to conquer death and our sins. We pray that we can realize and remember the gravity of what was accomplished on the cross and that it was your plan before the world was even created. Amen.
REVIEW one of these doctrine memory questions, or the month’s memory verse by having your kids repeat it after you.
Gospel Project Big Picture Question: Why did Jesus die on the cross? Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins and came back to life to show we are forgiven.
Memory Verse: It is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
