This Week in SojournKids: Jesus is Anointed (John 12:1-8)

We'd love for you to use this short devotional to review this week's story with your kids.

Background: In this week’s story Jesus heads back to Bethany where he raised Lazarus from the dead. There is a dinner party hosted by Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Martha served the food for the dinner, Lazarus reclined with his friend Jesus, and Mary took expensive perfume to anoint Jesus’ feet. Judas Iscariot saw what was happening and ask why the perfume was not sold and given to the poor. Judas was not really thinking of the poor, he wanted to steal the money for himself. Jesus explained to Judas that Mary was anointing him for burial and that he would not always be around.

Opening/Ice Breaker:  What do you think worshiping God looks like? Is it just singing? What can we do to worship God?

Read John 12:1-8

Questions/Apply it:

  • Who hosted this dinner party?
  • What do Mary do with the expensive perfume?
  • What did Judas want to do with the perfume?
  • What did Jesus say that Mary was preparing him for?

Prayer: Lord we thank you for sending your son Jesus to earth to die on a cross for our sins. We pray that we can worship you like Mary did. We pray that we can worship you in everything we do. Amen.

REVIEW one of these doctrine memory questions, or the month’s memory verse by having your kids repeat it after you.

Gospel Project Big Picture Question: Why do believers share the Lord’s Supper? Believers share the Lord’s Supper to remember Jesus’ life and death and to proclaim him until he returns.

Memory Verse: The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free. Luke 4:18
