This Week in SojournKids: Jesus Was Arrested (Matthew 26:36-27:2)

We'd love for you to use this short devotional to review this week's story with your kids.

Background: Jesus took his disciples to the garden of Gethsemane. He asked them to keep watch as he prayed. They could not stay awake. Jesus prayed three times. About that time Judas shows up and delivered Jesus to the chief priests. There is a struggle, someone loses an ear. Jesus then goes before the chief priests and they declared that Jesus deserved death. Peter denies Jesus three times after being asked if he was a follower of Jesus. Jesus is delivered over to Pilate.

Opening/Ice Breaker:  Have you ever had a friend who needed help with something? Was it easy or hard helping them? Now, what if they made you mad or sad, and then they still needed help. Would it be just as easy, or would it be harder to help them?

Read Matthew 26:36-27:2

Questions/Apply it:

  • How many times did Jesus pray in the garden?
  • Who betrayed Jesus?
  • How many times did Peter deny Jesus?
  • Who was Jesus delivered to at the end of the story?

Prayer: Lord we thank you for sending your son Jesus to earth to die on a cross for our sins. We pray that we can mirror and mimic the love that was shown to us as sinners. Thank you for your saving grace. Amen.

REVIEW one of these doctrine memory questions, or the month’s memory verse by having your kids repeat it after you.

Gospel Project Big Picture Question: Why do believers share the Lord’s Supper? Believers share the Lord’s Supper to remember Jesus’ life and death and to proclaim him until he returns.

Memory Verse: The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free. Luke 4:18
