God’s Covenant with Abraham (Genesis 12; 15; 17)

Josh RobertsComment

Parents,

Below are some devotional helps to use throughout the week.  We'd love for you to use some or even all of these to review this week's story with your kids.

Dinner Time (Deep Dive)

READ the story together.  (Genesis 12; 15; 17)

ASK some questions about the story.

  • Who were the main characters? (God, Abraham, and Sarah.)

  • What are the main story beats? (God tells Abraham to move; God promises Abraham the land of Canaan; God promises Sarah a son, Isaac.)

  • What’s the main point? (God made a covenant to bless the whole world through Abraham.)

CONNECT it to the family.

  • God has a plan for our lives. Like Abraham God has made promises to us as his people. We are called as a family to have faith in God’s promises and to trust to he keeps his promises.

PRAY together.

God, we thank you for the way that you care for us and love us. We pray that we can have faith like Abraham and trust you completely.  Amen.

Drive Time (Quick Refresh)

ASK what story we’ve been studying this week. (God’s Covenant with Abraham)

  • See what they remember from the story – details, main points, any take away they have, etc.

REMIND them of the main point.

  • God made a covenant to bless the whole world through Abraham.

Bedtime (Soul Work)

ASK how they feel about what we’ve been learning about this week.

  • Why do you think Abraham was willing to leave his home and obey God?

  • Do you think it would be hard to obey God if He called you to do something you didn’t completely understand?

  • How do your actions affect our relationship with God?

ENCOURAGE them about the truth of God’s promise.

  • God always keeps his promises.

RELATE to them.

  • Mom and Dad are called to trust that God will bring all things to good and that he always keeps his promises.

PRAY for them before they go to sleep.

Breakfast Time (Daily Encouragement)

ENCOURAGE them to trust God’s promise today.

  • At school as they’re working, playing, talking with friends, etc.

  • Remember that God keeps his promises.

PRAY for them before you drop them off to start their day.

REVIEW one of these doctrine memory questions, or the month’s memory verse by having your kids repeat it after you.

Gospel Project Big Picture Question: Why can we trust God? We can trust God because he is faithful and does everything for His glory and our good.

Memory Verse: Galatians 3:29 – “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”
