This Week in SojournKids: Sin Entered the World (Genesis 3)

Josh RobertsComment

Below are some devotional helps to use throughout the week.  We'd love for you to use some or even all of these to review this week's story with your kids.

Dinner Time (Deep Dive)

READ the story together.  (Genesis 3)

ASK some questions about the story.

  • Who were the characters? (God, Adam, and Eve.)

  • What are the big story beats? (The serpent deceived Adam and Eve; God confronts Adam and Eve; The serpent, Adam, and Eve are cursed.)

  • What’s the main point? (Adam and Eve broke God’s law, and their sin separated them from God.)

CONNECT it to the family.

  • We are all cursed with the sin that entered the world at the fall. Because of this curse we all need a savior. There is nothing we can do on our own to correct our relationship with God due to the fall. We need a savior and that savior is Jesus.

PRAY together.

God, we thank you for your love. We thank you for your plan. We are condemned sinners and you love us anyway. We thank you for your love and care for your creation. Amen.

Drive Time (Quick Refresh)

ASK what story we’ve been studying this week. (Sin Entered the World)

  • See what they remember from the story – details, main points, any take away they have, etc.

REMIND them of the main point.

  • Adam and Eve broke God’s law, and their sin separated them from God.

Bedtime (Soul Work)

ASK how they feel about what we’ve been learning about this week.

  • What are some rules your parents have for you?

  • Why do you think people sin against God?

  • How does sin affect our relationship with God and one another?

ENCOURAGE them about the truth of God’s promise.

  • Sin entered the world with Adam and Eve. That sin has cursed us and separated us from God. We need a savior to mend that relationship.

RELATE to them.

  • You are born a sinner.

  • There is not one single thing you can do on your own to change that.

  • The work Christ did on the cross mended that relationship and if you put your faith in Christ you can be forgiven.

PRAY for them before they go to sleep.

Breakfast Time (Daily Encouragement)

ENCOURAGE them to trust God’s promise today.

  • At school as they’re working, playing, talking with friends, etc.

  • Have courage to tell your friends about sin and about what Jesus did on the cross.

PRAY for them before you drop them off to start their day.

REVIEW one of these doctrine memory questions, or the month’s memory verse by having your kids repeat it after you.

Gospel Project Big Picture Question: Who is God? God is our Creator and King.

Memory Verse: Colossians 1:16-17 – “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
