The Golden Calf (Exodus 32; 34)

Josh RobertsComment

Below are some devotional helps to use throughout the week.  We'd love for you to use some or even all of these to review this week's story with your kids.

Dinner Time (Deep Dive)

READ the story together.  (Exodus 32; 34)

ASK some questions about the story.

  • Who were the main characters? (Moses, God’s People, and God.)

  • What are the main story beats? (God gives Moses the Ten Commandments; God’s people worshipped a golden calf, God disciplines His people.)

  • What’s the main point? (God disciplined His people for worshiping a golden calf.)

CONNECT it to the family.

  • We are called to worship God and God alone. All that we do as a family should direct all of our worship toward God.

PRAY together.

God, we thank you for being a God who disciplines and loves. We love you Lord. Amen.

Drive Time (Quick Refresh)

ASK what story we’ve been studying this week. (The Golden Calf)

  • See what they remember from the story – details, main points, any take away they have, etc.

REMIND them of the main point.

  • God disciplined His people for worshiping a golden calf.

Bedtime (Soul Work)

ASK how they feel about what we’ve been learning about this week.

  • How does God’s love show that He loves us?

  • Why is discipline necessary and helpful?

  • What would happen if we were never disciplined?

ENCOURAGE them about the truth of God’s promise.

  • God’s discipline is for our good.

RELATE to them.

  • Mom and Dad have to discipline you when you disobey. We do that because we love you. God disciplines hHis people because he loves them.

PRAY for them before they go to sleep.

Breakfast Time (Daily Encouragement)

ENCOURAGE them to trust God’s promise today.

  • Be encouraged that God will be with you today – when things are easy and when things are hard!

PRAY for them before you drop them off to start their day.

REVIEW one of these doctrine memory questions, or the month’s memory verse by having your kids repeat it after you.

Gospel Project Big Picture Question: What is worship? Worship is celebrating the greatness of God.

Memory Verse: Exodus 15:2 – “The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.”
