Achan’s Sin and the Defeat of Ai (Joshua 7-8)

Josh RobertsComment

Parents,

Below are some devotional helps to use throughout the week.  We'd love for you to use some or even all of these to review this week's story with your kids.

Dinner Time (Deep Dive)

READ the story together.  (Joshua 7-8)

ASK some questions about the story.

  • Who were the main characters? (Joshua, God, and His People.)

  • What are the main story beats? (Israel defeats Ai; Achan sins;  Joshua renews the covenant.)

  • What’s the main point? (God punished Achan for his sin. Then God fought for His people at Ai.)

CONNECT it to the family.

  • God punishes his people and is keep to forgive. Our family should be quick to forgive. Mom and Dad will have to punish you, but we must be quick to tell you that we love you and share with you why you were punished.

PRAY together.

God, we thank you for your rules. We thank you for your plan and your love for us. We love you lord. Amen.

Drive Time (Quick Refresh)

ASK what story we’ve been studying this week. (Achan’s Sin and the Defeat of Ai)

  • See what they remember from the story – details, main points, any take away they have, etc.

REMIND them of the main point.

  • God punished Achan for his sin. Then God fought for His people at Ai.

Bedtime (Soul Work)

ASK how they feel about what we’ve been learning about this week.

  • What does this story teach about God or the Gospel?

  • What did Achan do to deserve God’s punishment?

  • Did God still show his love to his people despite what Achan did?

ENCOURAGE them about the truth of God’s promise.

  • Obedience to God can be a form of worship to God.

RELATE to them.

  • God is a loving and wrathful God. His wrath can be seen, but his love is seen even more.

PRAY for them before they go to sleep.

Breakfast Time (Daily Encouragement)

ENCOURAGE them to trust God’s promise today.

  • Be encouraged that God will be with you today – when things are easy and when things are hard!

PRAY for them before you drop them off to start their day.

REVIEW one of these doctrine memory questions, or the month’s memory verse by having your kids repeat it after you.

Gospel Project Big Picture Question: Whom can we trust? We can trust God to take care of us.

Memory Verse: Joshua 1:9 - “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
