Josh RobertsComment

Below are some devotional helps to use throughout the week.  We'd love for you to use some or even all of these to review this week's story with your kids.

Dinner Time (Deep Dive)

READ the story together.  (1 Samuel 16-17)

ASK some questions about the story.

  • Who were the characters? (Samuel, David, God, and Goliath.)

  • What are the main story beats? (God sent Samuel to choose a new king, David is anointed, David fights Goliath.)

  • What’s the main point? (Jesus is our king.)

CONNECT it to the family.

  • We can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. God is our true king and he is with us. We can accomplish great things with God. We pray that our family can be empowered by God to glorify his name.

PRAY together.

God, we thank you that you give us the strength and the courage we need. We thank you for your love for us. Amen.

Drive Time (Quick Refresh)

ASK what story we’ve been studying this week. (David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath)

  • See what they remember from the story – details, main points, any take away they have, etc.

REMIND them of the main point.

  • God rejected Saul as king because of his sin.

Bedtime (Soul Work)

ASK how they feel about what we’ve been learning about this week.

  • Why did Samuel pour oil over David?

  • Which brother would you have expected to be king?

  • What weapons did David use to fight Goliath?

ENCOURAGE them about the truth of God’s promise.

  • You can do anything with God who gives you strength. Even when you are scared God is with you. You can remember what David did when you are scared or unsure.

RELATE to them.

  • God loves you and wants what is best for you. He sent Jesus the true king to die on a cross for you to take the punishment for your sin.

PRAY for them before they go to sleep.

Breakfast Time (Daily Encouragement)

ENCOURAGE them to trust God’s promise today.

  • At school as they’re working, playing, talking with friends, etc.

PRAY for them before you drop them off to start their day.

REVIEW one of these doctrine memory questions, or the month’s memory verse by having your kids repeat it after you.

Gospel Project Big Picture Question: Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world.

Memory Verse: Psalm 47:7-8 - “Sing a song of wisdom, for God is King of the whole earth. God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne.”
